The event brought together teenagers from different regions of Ukraine who were selected to take part in a non-formal educational and personal development program. The main goal of the camp was to create a safe, supportive, and motivating environment where young people could develop life skills, communication abilities, teamwork, and self-confidence, as well as gain new experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting.

The camp program combined educational, practical, and creative activities, allowing participants not only to acquire new knowledge but also to immediately apply it in real-life interactions. This approach helped them better understand the material and develop practical skills needed in everyday life. At the same time, it showed that learning can be engaging, dynamic, and closely connected to real-life situations.
During the camp, teenagers took part in training sessions, group tasks, and hands-on workshops. The educational program was complemented by creative activities, including pottery, soap making, and paracord weaving. These workshops helped participants develop creativity, attention to detail, and practical crafting skills, while also giving them the opportunity to express their potential. For many participants, it was their first experience with traditional crafts, which brought both new skills and positive emotions.
A special focus of the program was placed on inclusivity and barrier-free communication. Participants were introduced to the basics of Ukrainian Sign Language and finger spelling. This became an important step in developing empathy, social awareness, and understanding of the needs of different people in society. The participants concluded that even basic knowledge of inclusive communication can make interaction more open and comfortable for everyone.
In addition, a significant part of the program included team-building exercises aimed at developing leadership skills, trust, and effective group cooperation. Participants worked together on shared tasks, learned to make collective decisions, negotiate, support one another, and find solutions in challenging situations. It was during these activities that new friendships were formed and a strong sense of unity developed within the group.
One of the key highlights of the camp was a hiking trip along Carpathian trails. Participants explored the natural beauty of the region, walked mountain paths, and visited waterfalls and unique landscapes. This experience was not only a physical activity but also an important element of teamwork and mutual support. By completing the route together, participants learned to help one another, manage their energy, and achieve shared goals.

The stay in the Carpathians also contributed to emotional recovery. The natural environment allowed teenagers to take a break from daily stress, recharge, and gain new impressions, which positively influenced the overall atmosphere of the camp. The supportive environment, live communication, and active rest became an important resource for everyone involved.
After the camp, participants shared their impressions:

“We didn’t expect that in just a few days we could become so close. There were so many interesting activities, mountain hikes, workshops, new friendships, and support. We became more confident, learned to work in a team, and realized that stepping out of your comfort zone is not that scary. Most of all, we hope such meetings will happen again”, said the participants of the retreat camp.
The retreat camp in the Carpathians became an example of a modern educational approach that combines learning, personal development, and practical experience in a non-formal setting. Participants had the opportunity to expand their social skills, better understand their own abilities, try different activities, and experience the power of peer support. Such initiatives help young people develop an active life position, responsibility, independence, and confidence in their abilities.

Within the project “Strengthening Teaching and Learning Processes in Southern Regions of Ukraine”, UNICEF together with Progressive and Strong continue to implement educational initiatives aimed at supporting youth and introducing modern, experience-based learning approaches.
The Carpathian retreat camp is one of these initiatives, combining education, development, socialization, and recreation in a safe, friendly, and supportive environment. Such projects open new opportunities for young people, helping them grow personally, find like-minded peers, broaden their worldview, and take confident steps toward their future.
