“The Major Course on Artificial Intelligence in Education”

The NGO “Progressive&Strong”, in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, implemented a large-scale educational initiative — “The Major Course on Artificial Intelligence in Education.”
The program became one of the key steps in advancing the professional development of Ukrainian educators in the effective and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

Context and launch of the course

An official invitation to join the program was published on the website of the Ministry of Education and Science as part of Ukraine’s national policy on digital transformation in education.

The program was officially supported by government institutions and aimed to help teachers and lecturers integrate modern technologies into the learning process — especially in terms of responsible, ethical, and practical use of AI in education.
Scale and results

The initiative attracted unprecedented interest: a total of 8,768 registrations were received (including some duplicates and technical entries), and 4,641 participants successfully completed the program and received official certificates.

These figures highlight the strong demand within Ukraine’s educational community for developing digital competencies and gaining practical understanding of AI’s potential in education.
Course content

The program combined theoretical and practical components, covering key topics such as:
  • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence — fundamental concepts, principles of operation, and potential applications in education;
  • Practical use of AI — integrating tools to optimize teaching and learning;
  • Ethics, safety, and academic integrity — how to prevent misuse and ensure data protection;
  • The role of educators in the digital age — balancing humanity and technology;
  • Critical thinking and media literacy — how to teach students to use AI consciously and responsibly;
  • Practical cases and exercises — real examples of integrating AI into various disciplines.
Participants attended webinars and discussions, completed assignments, passed final tests, and received practical tools and ready-to-use teaching scenarios for applying AI in their institutions.
What Was Discussed During the Course: Key Themes and Reflections

The course covered a wide range of topics and discussions, helping participants not only to acquire technical skills but also to reflect on how AI is transforming education and research.

1. AI and Higher Education — Artificial intelligence reshapes teaching methods just as electricity or computers once transformed everyday life. The goal is not to ban but to understand and guide innovation so that Ukrainian graduates remain competitive globally.

2. AI and Academic Integrity — Educators discussed how the definition of honesty is shifting in the age of generative AI. The main question now is how to teach responsible AI use, not how to prohibit it.

3. Assessment in the AI Era — Evaluation should be continuous, emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, oral components, and project-based learning. AI should be integrated thoughtfully, not replace human judgment.

4. Legal and Ethical Aspects — Discussions focused on principles of responsible AI use: human-centeredness, transparency, fairness, safety, and accountability — key to building trust and ensuring ethical practices in education.

5. Dilemmas of AI in Education and Science — Questions arose about authorship, fairness, and access. Can AI be a “co-author”? How do we prevent new forms of inequality?

6. AI as a Teaching Assistant — Examples of using AI for personalized learning, automation of administrative tasks, content generation, and real-time feedback were explored.

7. AI as a Colleague, Not a Tool — Speakers emphasized the paradigm shift: AI is not just a tool but a collaborator
that inspires creativity. Teachers become curators and learning designers.

8. AI in Curricula and Pedagogy — Integration of AI competencies into programs, flexible curricula, and facilitation-oriented teaching approaches were highlighted.

9. AI in Scientific Research — AI’s role in data collection, analysis, visualization, and hypothesis generation was discussed, along with issues of research ethics and authorship.

10. Responsible AI in Higher Education — Key focuses included academic integrity, bias mitigation, data privacy, and explainability of AI-driven decisions.

11. Ukraine’s AI Future — Representatives of the Ministry of Digital Transformation presented the Center of Excellence on AI, aimed at shaping policy, nurturing talent, and fostering innovation.

12. Prompt Engineering for Education — The closing module focused on effective interaction with generative AI — how to formulate queries, engage in dialogue, and teach students “AI communication” as a new 21st-century literacy skill.
Key outcomes

The course enabled educators to:
  • acquire practical skills for working with AI tools;
  • understand the ethical and legal challenges associated with AI use;
  • see how technology can support and empower teachers, rather than replace them;
  • explore new approaches to assessment, academic integrity, and creative human–AI collaboration.
A major insight of the course was that AI should not be perceived merely as a tool — it is emerging as a partner in the educational process, helping teachers become facilitators and designers of learning.
Key discussion highlights

Throughout the course, speakers from leading universities, educational organizations, and digital technology experts discussed:
  • the impact of AI on higher education and the future of the teaching profession;
  • academic integrity in the era of generative AI;
  • innovative approaches to assessment and evaluation;
  • ethical and legal aspects of AI implementation;
  • challenges related to algorithmic bias and unequal access to technologies;
  • the concept of AI as a colleague — a partner collaborating with educators and students in the learning process.
Appreciation and resources

The organizers express sincere gratitude to all speakers, participants, and the Progressive&Strong team for their professionalism, openness, and active engagement.

This project became a significant milestone in building a community of educators ready for Ukraine’s digital educational transformation.
